Detective Lieutenant Somerset (Morgan Freeman) is a week away from retirement after many years of dealing with the destitution and apathy bred within the grimy and forlorn city. During this time, he is partnered with Detective Sergeant Mills (Brad Pitt), an arrogant but inexperienced detective who just transferred into the department from somewhere outside the metropolis. The two men are at odds with each other almost immediately; Mills is brash, temperamental, and lets his anger get the better of him, in stark contrast to Somerset’s analytical and introspective personality and methods.
Detective Lt. William Somerset originally began as a reworking of the Dr. Loomis Halloween figure. Unfortunately, that proved to be too tall for the rest of the group, so this first attempt was abandoned. “The Old Man” from NECA’s “A Christmas Story” proved to be a better bit. I removed the arms from The Old Man and hollowed out the shoulder areas, creating large cavities in the side of the torso. I then removed the arms from the torso of Dr. Loomis, making sure to retain the surrounding torso area to allow for articulated shoulders. After inserting this into the shoulders of The Old Man, I patched the seams with a combination of Magic Sculpt and Kneadatite. The head is reworked from a McFarlane Magic Johnson NBA figure while the hat comes from a Now Playing DARKMAN figure. The trenchcoat is taken from Dr. Loomis as well, and the majority of surface details were created using Magic Sculpt.
As a side note, I *hated* slicing up that Dr. Loomis figure, particularly after realizing it was too out-of-scale with the rest of the line. Luckily the arms and coat were salvaged. Still, I hated losing that figure…
