Over the course of 2005-2008, I assisted Art Asylum, designing production control art for various projects, most notably their Minimates line. This involved turnaround views for every part of the figure that was to be included in the final product, along with any surface artwork that needed to be applied.
One of my earliest projects at Art Asylum was also a dream come true: working on the Classic Battlestar Galactica Minimates line. I had already experienced success designing the Modern Era Cylon, and working on the classic series would give me a chance to revisit my childhood. I began by pulling up as much visual reference online as I could find. Luckily, there were many fan sites that documented every aspect of the original props. From there, it was just a matter of translating the details into a Minimate format. The final sculpt turned out a bit softer than I had hoped for. In person, the figures are a bit too round and pudgy, but it’s a minor nitpick. The figures received quite a nice treatment when they were initially released, with an entire wave devoted to nothing but the Classic Cylon.
While the photos shown here on the site represent the finished figure, it should be noted that I contributed the control art only. As with all of the Minimate projects, there were many talented people involved: production managers, sculptors, other designers… This figure was very much a team effort, and the finished product reflects the contributions of many individuals.
