Over the course of 2005-2008, I assisted Art Asylum, designing production control art for various projects, most notably their Minimates line. This involved turnaround views for every part of the figure that was to be included in the final product, along with any surface artwork that needed to be applied.
Deathstroke represents another challenging project. The amount of detailing that went into his costume design was fun to capture, and I’m glad DC Direct was willing to support such a complicated sculpt. My only nitpick is the lighter blue used on the mask. I personally had envisioned a black half, with blue highlights, as seen in the press photos.
I’m still not quite sure why that ended up getting changed along the way.
While the photos shown here on the site represent the finished figure, it should be noted that I contributed the control art only. As with all of the Minimate projects, there were many talented people involved: production managers, sculptors, other designers… This figure was very much a team effort, and the finished product reflects the contributions of many individuals. While I designed the overall Deathstroke control art, it should be noted that Art Asylum designer Uriel handled the Slade Wilson ‘unmasked’ face and hair, and the staff and guns were reused from previous Minimate sculpts.
