Over the course of 2005-2008, I assisted Art Asylum, designing production control art for various projects, most notably their Minimates line. This involved turnaround views for every part of the figure that was to be included in the final product, along with any surface artwork that needed to be applied.
As with Dr Fate and the Golden Age Flash, I was thrilled to work on another JSA character. Spectre went through a few subtle changes over the course of his design. I had initially drawn the shadow of the hood covering the eyes, with the white eyes showing though (similar to how the Teen Titans Raven character is drawn). This was asked to be revised, and I guess it makes more sense this way anyway. The hood presented numerous problems, but we eventually got there. I wish there was a way to have the gloves sculpted, but due to the nature of the figure, we felt it would look too much like oven mitts at this scale. Still, while he’s not all that impressive by himself, I like how he looks with his fellow members of the Justice Society of America.
While the photos shown here on the site represent the finished figure, it should be noted that I contributed the control art only. As with all of the Minimate projects, there were many talented people involved: production managers, sculptors, other designers… This figure was very much a team effort, and the finished product reflects the contributions of many individuals.
