Over the course of 2005-2008, I assisted Art Asylum, designing production control art for various projects, most notably their Minimates line. This involved turnaround views for every part of the figure that was to be included in the final product, along with any surface artwork that needed to be applied.

My good friend Anubis8 is far and away the biggest Flash fan I know, provided it’s Wally West, and not “Boring” Allen. When I saw Flash listed on the DC Minimate line-up, I instantly snatched him up, wanting to make my buddy proud. Wally was originally going to be a bit more ambitious of a figure: I had designed snap-on energy trails that would mimic the lightning energy Flash produces when he runs.

Unfortunately, this got dropped right before production. Also, I’m not quite sure why my Wally West face design was rejected, but they chose to go in a different direction. Normally I completely understood their decisions, although in this case I was pretty happy with how my original concept had turned out. Sorry to see it hadn’t made it into the finished piece.

DC Wave 7: Flash Minimate Design (Control Art Only) - by Matt 'Iron-Cow' Cauley

While the photos shown here on the site represent the finished figure, it should be noted that I contributed the control art only. As with all of the Minimate projects, there were many talented people involved: production managers, sculptors, other designers… This figure was very much a team effort, and the finished product reflects the contributions of many individuals.
