Over the course of 2005-2008, I assisted Art Asylum, designing production control art for various projects, most notably their Minimates line. This involved turnaround views for every part of the figure that was to be included in the final product, along with any surface artwork that needed to be applied.
As I recall, I was approached to develop the X3 Juggernaut Minimate since I had previously displayed a talent while working on some of the more technical / complicated Minimate designs. For me, I was just happy to be working not only on an x-Men property, but on a project that involved a “real life” person as well. This would be a good chance to see if I could adapt a “portrait” into a little figure. The complicated straps on the costume made for a great design challenge, and I couldn’t be happier with the finished sculpt. The figure turned out great! Also, it should be noted that in the end, fellow designer Uriel took over my designs and modified the face and chest artwork for the final release, keeping the artwork consistent with the overall Minimates style.
While the photos shown here on the site represent the finished figure, it should be noted that I contributed the control art only. As with all of the Minimate projects, there were many talented people involved: production managers, sculptors, other designers… This figure was very much a team effort, and the finished product reflects the contributions of many individuals.
