Over the course of 2005-2008, I assisted Art Asylum, designing production control art for various projects, most notably their Minimates line. This involved turnaround views for every part of the figure that was to be included in the final product, along with any surface artwork that needed to be applied.
For the most part, I handled the color and control art assembly on the entire Rocky Minimates line. To clarify: the pencil art for the figures had been created by another designer. I was brought in to clean up the art, transfer it to the Minimate control art templates, add in coloring and prep the files for production. I would eventually handle certain little details such as the logos on the shoes and robes, along with little bits here and there such as adding in the hand bandages. Speaking of the robes, I was actually involved in designing those, producing two variants to be sculpted. Though creating the robes was certainly not as involved an experience as designing the characters themselves, it proved to be a fun accessory all the same.
While the photos shown here on the site represent the finished figure, it should be noted that I contributed the control art for the robes and bandages only. Everything else was production and digital coloring. As with all of the Minimate projects, there were many talented people involved: production managers, sculptors, other designers… This figure was very much a team effort, and the finished product reflects the contributions of many individuals.
